UPDATE: Many more of the most reputable sources have confirmed this, including my own.
With rumors swirling of the league folding tomorrow, and reports stating the league was taking its last breaths, the owners finally met today to conclude their talks.
UPDATE: In a league statement,
According to Tim Marcum, AFL coaching veteran of 22 years (currently with the Storm) and the most winning coach in AFL history (7 Arena Bowls), the AFL is safe for 2009."NEW YORK – Despite rumors and reports to the contrary, the Arena Football League Board of Directors has not suspended the 2009 season at this time. The Board met via conference call this evening.
The Board will continue to meet regularly to examine any and all long-term structural improvement options for the AFL"
In Adam Adkins' Storm Report and a report from Tampabay.com, he states:
"Marcum said the league’s board of directors voted Wednesday night to move ahead with the season. Marcum said he wasn’t sure how many teams will play this year, but that the Tampa Bay Storm would be one of them and that the arena league will continue.
Marcum said he certainly felt a sense of relief with the news the league would continue, but lashed out at the varios media reports that had circulated in recent days that stated the AFL, which is said to be in serious financial trouble, was likely to cancel the 2009 season and possibly cease operations altogether"
In a quote from Marcum:
"One thing I’m very disappointed in is this predetermination, the false information that was out there, that said the Arena Football League was doomed,” Marcum said. I don’t know why people [media] are doing this. Nothing can happen without a vote of the board of directors, and they voted tonight going forward."
